  FLITNEY, Ross
Born In Hitchin On 01/06/1984  England
Player

Barnet signed Ross shortly after winning the Conference title in 2005, after he was released by Premier League Fulham.

The goalkeeper had to initially play second fiddle to Scott Tynan, before being given his first team chance in the second month of the 2005/06 season. Ross had a good early run in the Barnet team, but his most famous Barnet moment that everyone remembers came on Wednesday 26th October 2005 at Old Trafford. Just ninety seconds into the game, United hit a hopeful long ball that looked to have gone a little too far for (then) United striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to chase down. An eager Ross Flitney came out to get the ball, but a little too far. It was unnecessary, but maybe it was big game nerves and over-enthusiasm that went against him. Either way, Ross clearly caught the ball outside of the eighteen yard box. The referee blew for a free kick and it looked like Flitney would be cautioned for his silly misdemeanour, as he had not denied a goal scoring opportunity. However, Richard Beeby, the referee, had other ideas. With a cruel shrug of the shoulders, he showed Flitney a red card. Heartbreak for a young man playing in the biggest game of career, sent off after less than two minutes.

After this, with the exception of a few games, Flitney never looked particularly competent in a Barnet shirt and his form only seemed to get worse. He remained at Barnet for a second season in 2006/07, but was not such a regular in the first team. When he did play he became highly erratic, a particular favourite coming in a home game where Ross decided to duck and let the ball rebound off the bar, rather than save it. He managed to get away with that one.

Unsurprisingly, he was released by Barnet at the end of the 2006/07 season.  He joined Grays Athletic in the Conference where he spent nearly two seasons, before leaving after falling down the pecking order at The Recreation Ground. He signed for Croydon Athletic of the Ryman League Division One South in January 2009 and began the new season at the South London side.
