My word, the media storm and excitement around Underhill when big name Tony Cottee agreed to take over as player-manager in November 2000.
Tony is of course a well known player at the highest level, playing and scoring plenty of goals in the top flight for Everton, West Ham and Leicester City.
He had a dream start to his managerial career, too. In his first home game (after a 0-0 draw at Rochdale in his first outing) Barnet romped to their record football league win, which is still standing as we write this in 2011: Barnet 7 (SEVEN) Blackpool 0.
It didnt get much better than that. Well, no, it just got a lot worse. The rout of Blackpool put Barnet 7th in the table and left Blackpool in 24th. At the end of the season, the two sides had swapped places. Cottees reign at the club only lasted a mere four and a half months before he jumped from the rapidly sinking ship.
His playing performances were fantastic and showed he hadnt lost his scoring touch. Managerial ability? Well, no one has given him a chance since. He had a brief spell coaching at Leyton Orient and then was rumoured to be in for a job at Chester City.
Well, I say rumoured. An internet exclusive, if you ever read this Mr Cottee. The Chester City job offer was a hoax. I mean, youll know that by now, but you fell for it at the time, didnt you? I could never possibly reveal the culprits behind this incident, but all I know is a friend of Downhill Second Half got Tonys phone number. They rang him pretending to be the Chester City chairman, offering him a job interview. Cottee fell for it hook line and sinker and was left feeling very embarrassed and on his own in a hotel lobby somewhere, waiting for the Chester chairman to turn up, of course, he never did. Amusing, no?
Since his unsuccessful dabble in management at Barnet, Cottee has worked as a pundit for Sky, but definitely still dreads the day they send him to Underhill again. Hes been before and I dont think he enjoyed it too much.
