Phew!
I wrote an article on Friday whilst travelling down to London, on my way through Kettering. As I write this, I'm just approaching Northampton. We'll be going there again next year, rather than sampling the 'delights' of Kettering or Gateshead or Fleetwood Town and so on. What a huge relief.
In the end of course, our result meant very little on Saturday. Burton Albion did the business and comfortably beat Grimsby. One time Bees forward Greg Pearson got a goal to help us out and everything. My mate was saying upon leaving the ground how he wished that our late goal had been what kept us up. I was fine with Burton having done the job by about 4:30, we've had more than our fill of drama this last fortnight!
I know you should be gracious in both victory and defeat, but just a quick message to all the Grimsby fans who came onto the pitch against us last week, or the one's starting unneccesarily on people after the game: HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Yes, that maybe somewhat childish, but those morons left a very sour taste with their actions a week ago and I couldn't be happier to see them join non-league alongside the likes of the lovely fans at Luton Town. Once again Grimsby's moron element played up on the pitch afterwards. The scenes on the television showed them for exactly what they are. For the genuine Mariners fans, yes you've got to feel a bit of sympathy for what they're going through, but the table doesn't lie, they deserved to finish 23rd. I expect they'll be back in the league again before long, though. What a decline they've had in the last five or six years.
So, the Barnet game on Saturday. To be fair, I thought we were very good. It didn't matter how we won, though it was a shame we didn't get one earlier on to settle the nerves. We certainly had the chances. Rochdale weren't great mind you, I think a lot of their players were already on the beach, given they've been up for weeks. Good luck to them in League One, I was pleased they finally got out of this league, although on that showing they'll be back before too long. Good bunch of fans too, the one's in the Queens Arms after were a laugh.
I wrote on here before Saturday that I thought young Vilhete was probably worth a start on Saturday and I think he proved that. He needs to fill out a bit, but he didn't half work hard and get stuck in, at times against players who looked twice his size! Certainly appears to be an exciting prospect for the future and if anything is a perfect example of why we had to avoid relegation and keep that new academy open. Vital for the future of this club.
I had to laugh a bit that it was Albert 'talentless' Jarrett who popped up with our winner. Anyone whose read any of my articles this season will know what I think of him, but fair play, he gave us a good moment on Saturday. Doesn't change my opinion of him, though. Something that applies to the whole team, really. They've been shocking this season. I thought the lap of 'honour' was pretty audacious. Lap of shame, maybe. Fair play, they did well on Saturday, but since October we have largely been dreadful. Heads must roll. I've said before about the scale of change I feel is needed to take the club forward, I just hope we see it over the coming months.
Even though it wasn't something to celebrate really, it was good to see so many smiling faces at Underhill on Saturday. It made a change! The pitch invasion at the end was quite funny and all good natured. I quickly turned into a little kid when that happened, one of the first ones on. I was buzzing to be fair, but it was all based on pure relief. And I do like going a bit mad at football and it had been a while since I'd been able to, so, y'know. Jake Cole got a deserved big hug off me on the pitch, he's been great this season, likewise Mark Hughes. The only ones who come out with much credit, though I must admit giving a hug and a thank you to Paul Furlong. Sure, he's not been terribly good this year, but he's been a great servant to the game, is a true professional and for me the fact he laid the ball off to Jarrett for the goal, rather than going for glory himself in his final game of a great career just speaks volumes about him. Wish him the very best of luck with whatever he does after finally hanging his boots up.
So there we go. In the end, we had nothing to worry about! Saturday was very enjoyable, though. Congratulations and thank you to Paul Fairclough for coming in and doing the job. I'm pleased that he can be looked at in a better light than 18 months ago when he resigned. He clearly cares an awful lot about Barnet Football Club and I hope he continues his association with us through the youth set up, but I believe we need someone completely new at the helm.
I'm sure I'll write something else on here at some point, but all the same, I hope all you Downhill Second Half readers have a cracking summer. Enjoy the break from Barnet, the world cup and maybe even a bit of nice weather. See you in August. Up the Bees.
