Wow. How are we in this sort of place again? I haven’t written anything on here for some time, but I felt the last few weeks and the way some comments this weekend from a certain bearded individual have made me feel today, that I penned a bit of opinion. I hope you’ve missed me.
Lawrie Sanchez: You make David Brent’s managerial style in the TV hit the office appear impressive and not at all cringeworthy. Just who the bloody hell do you think you are? It's so self indulgent. “I beat England and Spain when I was Northern Ireland manager.” That’s in the past, Lawrie. “I took Wycombe to the FA Cup Semi-Final and kept them in League One for a number of years.” That’s in the past, Lawrie. “I got the Fulham job in the Premiership and kept them up.” That’s in the past too, Lawrie and it didn’t go too well after the initial honeymoon period after your arrival – hang on, that sounds familiar...
This man who is currently running the football club is an absolute joke. We made such an encouraging start to the campaign, but now we find ourselves in a worse position, in terms of points on the board, than this time last year. How is that acceptable? Mark Stimson was being strongly ousted by many of our fans by now, no wonder the ‘Sanchez Out’ calls are getting louder. Stimson was a terrible manager, but to his credit I don’t doubt he was trying and did actually care about the state of things. He just wasn’t up to it. Sanchez though? The king of apathy. Perhaps our bearded leader is so deluded and wrapped up in his own little world where is ever so talented that he hasn’t realised that performing like you are in your current role is not only ruining another season at Barnet FC, but also what he has left of a ‘reputation.’
We were all quite excited when he got appointed. Big name, known in the game, exciting stuff for little old Barnet. What a false dawn. Have you heard some of the drivel he has spouted in recent weeks? Constantly contradicting himself (“we have a good squad here” / “the squad aren’t good enough, I inherited them, not my team”), blaming individual players for mistakes (Parkes at Hereford) and other things I am aware of that sadly I can not share with you on this fine website. Appalling man-management, let alone his abysmal tactics and team selections. The bloke does not have a clue! Do you reckon he’s still ‘got’ the dressing room? Hmmm.
The thing that was probably the final straw for me (the final, final, final one, that is) is this comment that Barnet “owe” him for saving us from relegation last season. You can only laugh, really. Nothing to do with Martin Allen, no? Nothing to do with Grazioli? The players? He rocked up for the final four games. Yes, we did alright, but look at the player’s response to Grazioli at full time on the final day of last season. I didn’t see Sanchez on anyone’s shoulders or anyone singing his name. I have no doubt he helped out, but just the sheer shameless audacity he has to take credit and hype himself up about anything he possibly can....staggering. Have you seen his personal website? Embarrassing! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!?
We are not a big club, not even a medium sized one, but like any club will tell you; ‘no one is bigger than the club’ and that certainly applies to one very misguided excuse of a football manager currently at Underhill.
Next weekend will certainly be interesting, provided he is still the manager. AFC Wimbledon’s fans will understandably welcome him to their place with open arms and a warm reception. Fair enough, he did score Wimbledon’s most famous goal of all time. What will be curious to see is how bad the reception is from what should be a relatively decent away following, poor form aside, new ground and a short journey. To inform anyone who wasn’t aware, away fans are housed behind the dugouts at Wimbledon. I get the impression he will be fully clear what some of us think of him, especially if Saturday is another poor display. Will he bite? I hope so. I hope he hears what people’s opinions are of him and maybe wakes up to reality, does the decent thing and takes his leave from Barnet Football Club. It’s too late for him to turn it around. If you were a player, would you want to play for him? Do any of our fans truly respect him? His position, in my eyes, is fast becoming untenable. It’s a shame he has shown no class, dignity or real awareness of what is going on. This is just painful now. He actually is David Brent, but maybe not quite as sophisticated!
Personally, I think this is such a real shame. Everything’s just gone full circle, it’s once again a depressing chore being a Barnet fan. It really makes you think, what is the point? I’ll be going to Wimbledon purely as I’ve not been there before and there’s a load of us on the sauce all day for it. As things stand, that will be my only game for the foreseeable future. I had been to every home game until Southend last week. Thankfully, I had planned for a while to do something else that night, so I was never going, but knew exactly what would happen. I was glad I missed out. Yesterday, however, a prime example of the current state of affairs. Myself and a large group of mates had pencilled yesterday in as a big old meet up, all of us Barnet fans. We watched Chelsea v Arsenal in the Queens pre-match, 15 of us I think. Of that, I believe 4, maybe 5 went to the game. The rest of us decided Jeff Stelling was a better option. I had a free ticket, but that wasn’t enough to entice me. I don’t want to make myself miserable watching this team at the moment, life is too short! Unfortunately, I seem to have felt like this at one stage or another of each of the past four or five years. At the moment it really isn’t worth my time. Once again, something is going to need to happen to truly win back the likes of myself and many others. Maybe that makes me a shit fan, but the miles I’ve travelled, youth I’ve wasted and money I have spent following Barnet Football Club makes me feel that continuing to go can be justified. At the moment, it just can’t. This is pony. Yet again, Mr Kleanthous (I can’t be bothered to say anything in this article, count yourself lucky) you have it all to sort it out. Do it quickly, do it right, make my club worth supporting again...
PS. That FA Cup draw is good aint it? Fucking Southport! Just what we need in these apathetic times, an away tie, bloody miles away, where we will more than likely be victims of an ‘upset.’ Terrific.
